The Wall Street Journal has reported that a F-16 fighter jet which was transferred to Kyiv earlier this month has crashed in Ukraine.

The WSJ reported citing a US official that the fighter jet was downed by Russia but did crash during a massive attack by Russia on Monday.

On Monday Ukraine came under the largest attack by Russia with more than 200 ballistic cruise missile and around 100 kamikaze drones.

The WSJ said, “The crash was likely a result of pilot error.”

The WSJ added, “The Ukrainian Air Force wouldn’t confirm the crash or the status of the pilot.”

“F-16 fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were used to repel a missile attack on the territory of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, along with units of anti-aircraft missile troops,” the Ukrainian army said.

“As it turned out later, the aircraft crashed, killing the pilot,” the military said.

Ukrainian officials did not name the pilot, however but a unit said the pilot was Oleksiy Mes was killed on Monday.

“On 26 August, while repelling a Russian massive combined missile and air strike, Oleksiy destroyed three cruise missiles and one attack drone,” Ukraine’s Western air command unit said.

“Oleksiy saved Ukrainians from deadly Russian missiles. Unfortunately, at the cost of his own life,” it added.
